Wollemi Pine
One of the world's oldest and rarest trees
Scientific name Wollemia nobilis of the Family Araucariaceae and was assumed to be extinct as only know from fossil records.
Related to the Kauri, Norfolk Island, Hoop, Bunya and Monkey Puzzle pines it was discovered in 1994 200km west of Sydney in a rainforest gorge within the 500,000 hectare Wollemi National Park in the Blue Mountains by David Noble, a NSW National Parks and Wildlife Officer
The Wollemi Pine belongs to the 200 million year old Araucariaceae family
Oldest known fossil is 90 million years
The Wild population is less than 100 mature trees. It's a conifer with attractive, unusual dark green foliage, bubbly bark and sprouts multiple trunks. This and a few others have been deliberately planted and are thriving at Logan gardens.
More tomorrow.
