Trip to the library
Monday
I needed to go to the library this morning to get the book for next month’s book club - there was just one copy left available, at the Madeira branch, so I wanted to get it before any one else did. In the Cincinnati area, we are blessed with a great public library system. In addition to the large main library location in downtown Cincinnati, the library operates 41 regional and branch locations throughout Hamilton County. We are equally placed between two - just about ten minutes drive away, while Madeira is just a little bit further to the south. When I arrived, one of the library trucks was pulled up outside, dropping off crates of books and picking up others destined for other branches, so I thought I would do a collage showing one of the entrances, the colourful truck and at the top the beautiful tiled frieze either side of the entrance door.
In the evening was this month’s book club - a fairly small group this evening, just five of us, discussing Barbara Kingsolver’s latest book, Unsheltered, which tells the story of two families living in the same house, but in different centuries, as they navigate the challenges of surviving a world in the throes of major cultural shifts. Whilst I think most of us felt there were some slow, somewhat “forced” sections, particularly in the first half of the book, in general we agreed that it was a very cleverly crafted book, giving plenty of food for thought.
