Hopkins River
Today was one of the best days so far. After a big breakfast on the Lake Ohau beach, we packed up the tent and headed off down to the Hopkins river. The aim was to drive to the Red Hut, and carry on to tramping further down.
The 4wd track was very rough, but we took it slowly. Getting out every now and again to check where we should cross the river. we decided not to cross the Hopkins, but left the truck and hiked up the Huxley River. It was like being in Heaven. A beautiful beech forest, opening up into the most amazing wide tussock grass wide flat valley. We don’t see another soul the whole day out.
We drove out of The Valley and decided to stay at Lake Ohau Lodge, as we’d already had 2 nights on DOC campsites, and we’re definitely ready for a shower!
