Alexander Graham Bell
Few people realize that Bell, the inventor of the telephone, was born in Scotland but at the age of 23, moved to Paris, Ontario. His invention was born out of his desire to teach his students to speak. It was in his home in Brantford, that the first transmission was heard across telegraph wires 6 miles away. Now look at us...
The cast bronze monument was designed in the Art Deco style by sculptor Walter S. Allward and was created in 1917. There are two women flanking a very interesting bas relief of people stretching around the world, following a telephone wire. How wonderful that Bell was able to see this monument in person! Allward, is also the sculptor who created the Vimy Ridge Memorial (which is on my bucket list).
For all the detail shots I took of the monument, this is the first statue you see and at this angle it is very dramatic. You can't tell it, but it was snowing! Bitterly cold as we walked around downtown Brantford seeking out all the statues to photograph. The two of us leaning into the wind and snow as we walked around, dressed for Spring, would have made an excellent Silly Saturday blip....however, Bell wins.
