Chandigarh and Le Corbusier
Chandigarh is certainly different. It is most like an Indian Milton Keynes....grids and greenery with wide streets.
Le Corbusier designed the city and many of the public buildings. We had the opportunity to visit the site of the major government buildings he designed in the early 1950s: the Palace of the National Assembly of the states of Punjab and Haryana on the left of my pic, the High Court of Justice in the far right and the Palace of the Secretariat of Ministers, not in shot.
A couple of extras show details of the two buildings....in design, colour and shape pure 1950s. Those old enough, think Festival of Britain. Colourful huge pivot door to National Assembly only used twice a year by the Leader of the Assembly. Closer pic of High Court with 50s colours of red, green and yellow.
We were not allowed to take photos inside the National Assembly which was a shame as there was a superb example of Le Corbusier's design in ceiling art.
A very short stay here but I think well worth a longer visit. Maybe next time...Charles?
Very warm here after the cool breezes of Mussoorie but cool again tomorrow as we head to Shimla on the Toy Train.
