Took a walk by the city walls in Southampton today. A tangible link with the city’s historic past which stand check by jowl to the prime commercial centre.
The city is reputed to have some of the most complete medieval town walls in the country. They were built in stages over 300 years, And parts dae from as early as 1290. But this section of the walls was not built until the 14th century as defences. History has it that a raid on the city by the French in 1338, led Edward III to order walls be built to “close the town”. These were completed in 1380. The walls included eight gates and 29 towers, stretched for over a mile around the town. Today about half of it survives.
