Look at things closely.
How Blip makes you look at things properly. I have walked past this tree hundreds of times as it is just three minutes from my front door. But I have never before stopped to look at it closely.
It is a large conifer called a Lawson’s Cypress. Chamaecyparis lawsoniana to be scientifically precise.
It was “discovered” in 1854 by a collector working for Charles Lawson, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He owned the Lawson and Son Nursery in Edinburgh. Its native area is north western California and Oregon. Its wood is often used to make guitars.
In the photo the red flowers are the male ones and the green ones on the right hand side are female.
