Waimak In Flood

Up to half a metre of rain was expected on the West Coast, on the other side of the mountains. They did suffer a deluge and serious flooding. On this side of the mountains we had a trifling 6.5mm. Still, the nearby Waimakariri River has its headwaters in a high rainfall area. I went to the Gorge Bridge to have a look. The river was certainly running high. I took this shot from the bridge looking upstream. Downstream the usually braided river was spread out in one wide channel.

The extra shots show the turbulence, one from the bridge and the other from river level. Unlike with rapids the “hills” pass on down the river.

The river when not in flood.
