Limestone
This is what most of Öland bedrock consists of, limestone. Lots and lots of buildings in olden times, both for humans and animals, used this way of constructing walls. Not only did the poorest people use this material but also the aristocracy. The huge castle nearby built in the 1200s also used limestone slabs as building material for its walls.
On the farm where I live, one part of the estate was meant for the old people to move to when their children took over the farm and the main house. It consists of a kitchen and a small bedroom, a laundry ( a big cauldron where you boil your washing) and some storage space. All with bare stone walls or, in some places a thin wooden inner wall. Of course you put lime mortar between the rocks and usually different kinds of moss to make it tight and somewhat draft free but it can't have been very warm in there in autumn and wintertimes.
I used the beautiful day to change from winter tires to summer ones on my car. We are allowed to use the winter ones up till the 15 of april, or longer if the weather demands it but I'm driving 300 km to Lund tomorrow and the summer tires makes less noise from the road which makes the driving less tiresome. There is no snow in sight in this part of the country right now, at least not over the weekend so I trust my luck.
Who knows, maybe a Lund Blip will show up here in the coming days.
