Icelandic Christmas traditions include the scheduled appearance of various "Yule Lads".

Askasleikir (the bowl licker) is scheduled to appear on the 17th December, and to polish off the unfinished food left on plates. He wouldn't have fared well at the birthday party last night, but perhaps that's why he didn't appear until today.
