Reynisdrangar, Iceland
We have been on the go since we arrived and sadly, we fly home tomorrow. It has been an amazing trip, so many natural wonders of the south coast. We will be back, back to Hotel Rangá and more explorations in the other compass directions. There were so many special moments, but here are some, The blipmeet with Hrund, the special birthday preparations secretly planned byT, BB and Gregory, the shimmering Diamond Beach yesterday AND a two hour Aurora Borealis show in the northern sky surrounding the hotel last night. Tonight at dinner the manager of 10 years told us that what we saw last night was very lucky, on a scale of 1-10 they usually see lights in parts of the sky, rated at about a 3 or 4. He would give our viewing a 7, it was an arc of light spanning the sky over the front of the hotel with spiking rays, undulating and dancing. I could faintly see a hint of green sometimes, but the sky was filled with dancing ivory light. We were astonished and humbled. A guest with a Nikon on a tripod took a 10 second timed exposure of us with the lights above us. The shot was intensely green and amazing, the long DSLR exposure captures all the colors our eyes cannot see in the dark. He promised to email us copies, I hope he keeps his word. The show, the dancing images will forever be embedded in our minds, it was just so unforgettable.
In the extras I have posted a humble iPhone Aurora shot, the lights looked cream colored to us due to our limited color vision at night, but astonishingly amazing as the spiked and undulated in an arc above us.
Today we drove towards Vik and went to the black sand beach to view the caves, and basalt caverns lining the beach. It's the most dangerous beach in Iceland with infamous ' sneaker waves ' that have swept many who turned their back on the ocean, to their deaths. We survived and were properly awed. The photo I have selected for my blip is the almost spring(ha, in a country with 4 season weather each day, is there a real spring?) version of what we have as a screen saver at home on our desktop from our October 2017 trip. It's part of the black beach as well and very beautiful.
We also went to the fabulous and new volcano museum, LAVA. It was interactive and really well designed. We are very close to the volcano that erupted10 years ago scrambling air travel over Europe. M. Hekla, another over performing volcano is seen in the distance, ready to erupt anytime.
Two waterfalls , countless snow-covered
mountains, horses and sheep rounded out the day.
For the Record,
This day came in cloudy with spots of sun and warmer temps, just above freezing, negated by the incredible wind.
All hands not ready to go home.
