Paying Homage
My first trip to New Zealand was in 1985. I was with Greenpeace at the time, and shortly after my arrival the Rainbow Warrior arrived in Auckland in preparation for her voyage to Moruroa to protest French nuclear testing. Three days later, the French secret service exploded two bombs on her hull, sinking the ship and killing one crew member. I'd left the boat about 15 minutes before the explosion and ended up staying for two months afterwards helping in the office.
Marsden Wharf, where this photo is taken, is now an industrial dock. The police station where we waited all night for news of our missing friend is now a pub. The courthouse where two of the secret service agents were arraigned is now a hotel.
