Watching the chickadees
Still waiting for the migraine to subside, I'm resting at Sue's house while she plants seedlings and builds bamboo fences to support their tendrils as they grow. There is so little wild space left in this city, her goal is to create a haven for pollinators, birds, and odd specimens of wildlife. She allows "weeds" to flourish. She plants bee-balm and butterfly-bush, flowering currant, sweet peas, scarlet runner beans.... And then, entranced, she watches chickadees, finches, wrens, jays, and warblers dart through the rhododendrons and looks to see if the mason bees are ready to start emerging from their tubes.
