Avenham Park, Preston

This was taken at the edge of Avenham Park, about 20 minutes before 482 people turned up for the 5K Parkrun. I had arrived early because I didn't know quite what to expect and I was meeting up with a friend.

It was a lovely morning and a great atmosphere. This was my third Parkrun and my friend's first. My first two runs were at Lytham Hall - a flat course. Avenham is very different and to stay sane you need to laugh about it. The course contains a very steep hill which you must run (or crawl) up three times. I can't tell you how wonderful it then is to run down a long gentle slope. I can't fully express the feeling of relief and pleasure. That last downhill run and left sweep to the finish line is just great.

Parkruns are organised around the world, and they take place in pleasant parkland surroundings. They are free, weekly, 5km timed runs, and people of all abilities are encouraged to take part. They are fun and open to everyone.
