Manhole

Not a manhole leading to drains but a hole with a ladder down into an underground operations room manned by RAF personnel during the war. Lodge Farm on Nazeing Common was a dummy decoy airfield and the airmen were responsible for maintaining the lights and moving the dummy planes around.

I spotted that the trap-door/manhole cover was open when I took Ollie for a walk this afternoon. How interesting to peer inside and hear my voice echoing around the underground chamber. I've explored the area around the other bunker on the site but didn't know of the entrance to this one until today.
