Strike at Stop & Shop
The strike by local 1445 of the UFCW (United Food and Commercial International Union) is in its third day, involving 30,000 workers at more than 200 supermarkets in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. I drove down to cheer them down today. Marylee worked for decades at the New York office of Cornell University's ILR School, which has strong ties to labor unions. Later we watched the Masters golf tournament; the leaders are incredibly closely bunched, with 19 golfers within seven strokes of the top at the finish of today's third round. Tomorrow's final round has been moved up, to start at 7:30 a.m., because severe thunderstorms are forecast for late in the afternoon.
