Songkran

It’s Thai New Year and the Thai restaurant in Maputo hosted a loud party. I went along with a couple of friends Lola and Matt to have a few beverages after a chilled day. The only available table was occupied by an inebriated chap called Raimundo. We listened to his views on politics and his life history as we sat there with faces covered in the traditional Songkran mixture of clay powder and water, which was daubed on as soon as we showed up.

I went to the roof of my building to read in the sun. The roofspace is aesthetically unappealing and dominated by pigeons and their droppings. As Maputo now enters several months of dry weather with less intense heat, I could create a little seating area for sunbathing and chilling. The view from this side of the roof includes the leafiness of the British High Commission compound. Its proximity is very handy if I have any passport disasters or want to create any anti-Brexit demonstrations directed towards the British government.
