Looking
We started in the main square of Krakow old town, at St Mary's Basilica: so beautiful it made me grin as I walked in. Every wall and pillar is painted in earth colours, the ceiling is gold stars on blue and there are incongruous bits of almost-art nouveau in the side chapels (extra). The medieval altar is being restored and I watched a fascinating bit of film about the painstaking restoration work they are doing.
We were blessed with a cloudless sky, so we ambled around the old town, climbed up to the castle, gazed down at the river and beyond, watched a sculpture of a dragon breathe fire, and walked on to Kazimierz, the Jewish quarter. It was warm enough to eat lunch outside and we noticed that over half the people walking past us were eating ice creams. I googled 'Best ice cream in Krakow' and sure enough, it was 45 metres away. So we joined the queue.
The architecture and street art of Kazimierz deserve walking round and by the time our feet next needed a rest, it was Klezmer music time, with bands in nearby bars taking turns to play.
