At our back door, another peaceful image in the wake of the Notre Dame fire. As some of you may recall, we visited General De Gaulle's estate in March. There we saw the small table where he had been sitting, when he collapsed and died. Georges Pompidou, then Prime Minister, proclaimed: "France has been widowed". De Gaulle's death and the destruction of Notre Dame are precisely parallel.
