Outside the National Theatre
Taken from Waterloo Bridge this afternoon. The bridge was closed to traffic because it had been taken over by environmental protestors. It felt rather like a demonstration of the late 1960s or early 1970s - complete with protest songs - except that the average age of the protestors was somewhat higher. Indeed, some of them probably took part in protests back in the '60s and'70s.
Before this I had been to the excellent Sony World Photography Awards at Somerset House. As it was the opening day there were many of the prizewinning photographers in attendance, congratulating each other on their successes, being photographed in front of their photographs and generally glowing with pride. I did see one young lady shriek with surprise and delight as she rounded a corner to find her photograph filling a complete wall at the end of a corridor. She must have known it was in the exhibition, but clearly had no idea of how it was to be presented. She said she felt very happy - and so she should.
