Corporal punishment: The stocks

From 1351, public stocks were positioned in the most public place available, as public humiliation was a critical aspect of such punishment. A person condemned to the stocks was subjected to abuses, ranging from having refuse thrown at them, tickling or whipping of unprotected feet
Their last recorded use in the UK was in 1872 at Newcastle Emlyn, West Wales, where this photo was taken earlier today.
