ridge and furrow strip system
As there was some mild curiosity over yesterdays blip in regard to field systems I thought I would do a quick blip on a small area of land near to Ashbourne. The farmer retains these fields in their medieval condition and they haven't been ploughed flat so its nice to see them, they look more atmospheric with side lighting.
They have enclosed the fields either with dry stone walling or hedgerows but it would have been wide open fields at one point with these strips possibly owned by separate families and cultivated accordingly. Around this area you start to get the dry stone walls of the north and the hedgerows of the midlands meeting.
much of the peak district has dry stone walling, which in itself is an interesting tradition and quite complicated, I know I struggle when repairing my wall :)
On a more positive note, last night I spotted a research post in which I had about two hours to put an application in before the deadline so fingers crossed, the internet is great for last minute applications :)
