The dropped stitch

Flotta Woods

A sunny, early morning trip over to Flotta, and I enjoyed a brief stroll up to the remains of the wartime cinema, before the ferry back.

During the Second World War men stationed on the island decided to plant Spruce behind the cinema 'to relieve the crushing monotony and to get a little exercise'.

Then in the 1980s there was lots more tree planting undertaken at the time of the construction of the oil terminal.

It's good to read on the information board that planting continues. As the old Spruce reach the end of their lives they are replaced with new trees of different species.

A path leading off into their depths is tempting, but no time today!
