Hetton miners’ statue
Today, Hetton, my home town, unveiled its very own statue by the same artist that created Seaham Tommy. It shows a man sending his son off on his first day down the pit (coal mine).
The bairns were no younger than six when they went down the mines. Of those children that died, most seem to have been killed by the tubs.
I was mildly disappointed the Duchess of Cambridge didn’t turn up, what with her family history and everything.
