A Spot of Culture
Backblip From Friday 26th April.
B, A and I went on a visit to King's Lynn, particularly to see the historic dock area and the old town. This is the Custom House which was used as the port office for HM Customs between 1693 and 1989. It is now the Tourist Information Office, although it is closed for building work at the moment.
The statue in front is the great navigator and surveyor Captain George Vancouver , who was born in King's Lynn in 1757. He was responsible for charting thousands of miles of coastline between San Diego California to Anchorage Alaska.
My extra is called 'Good Job we Booked'! This is a rather abstract view of the seats in the Guildhall of St George, I liked the effect of the sun slanting through the windows. This is the only surviving working theatre where Shakespeare performed, amazingly it was built in 1410. Sadly it is under threat at the moment due to lack of funding. Although owned by the National Trust it is on long-term lease to the local council who are finding it increasingly difficult to sustain.
I do hope it can be saved.
