What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?
Everyone in Mozambique has their eyes on the far northern coast, where Cyclone Kenneth is forming. This is the first time Mozambique has suffered two cyclones of extreme strength in the same season. One natural disaster cannot be attributed to climate change without looking at the bigger picture. The bigger picture reveals that the waters of the Mozambique Channel are gradually warming, which is good news for cyclones as they take their energy from the oceans as they develop. Mozambique should expect disasters of this type at an increasing frequency.
An evening meal with John and Luis at a restaurant that is rapidly becoming my Maputo favourite. It’s set in a park so is more tranquil than the average, has loud tablecloths, fatally strong piri-piri, and ice cream dishes that are entirely edible.
What’s the Frequency, Kenneth? is an R.E.M song from the 1990s. Its title is bizarre, as is the event after which it was named. An American journalist was once attacked by assailants who shouted, ‘Kenneth, what is other frequency?’ as they were doing it. Truly quite odd.
