Marjorie's ramblings

Jane Glover and more

We went to the RVI this morning for Mum to have electromyology tests. I was delighted to find a parking space in the road outside the hospital; now that we use a wheelchair, it is easy to go the short distance from the car which would be too, too far with a walker.

The doctor was a delight and charmed Mum through the painful tests. Results will come in a couple of weeks.

This evening I was at the Queens Hall for two talks. First up was Jane Glover talking about her book Handel in London. She was captivating and spoke very well. The interviewer was excellent.

Here you see Jane listening to the first person at the book signing. I heard him say that he had sung in a choir which Jane conducted for a concert.

Then we heard Misha Glenny who we know from his work as a BBC reporter. Ten years ago his non fiction book, McMafia  was published. It did not really hit the headlines until a fictionalised drama was made from it and shown on TV.

Tonight he gave a scripted presentation with slides and video clips. The content was interesting but I did not like this form of presentation. He is not an actor. His manner initially had people near me roaring with laughter, which subjects like the drug trade, organised crime and people trafficking don't really warrant.

There was a Q & A afterwards. Here Misha spoke fluently and eruditely. He gave reasoned answers to the questions. Brilliant. I nearly didn't stay, but was glad I did. He gave me lots to think about.

It's made for a late night, but worth it.
