de Steenkist Rijs...

seen during my Gaasterland wandeltocht(walking tour) of 16,1 km

the sign says:

In March 1849, forest worker Herman Wessels Kouwenhoven stumbled upon a few large boulders while digging a ditch. The boulders were removed and used for paving. Later it turned out that the only known "Hunebed" of Friesland had been destroyed. The grave was examined three times. In 1849, in 1919 and 1996. The latest research showed that this is not a hunebed but a coffin, a construction of a deep pit with relatively small stones. Such a coffin was largely laid underground, had no entrance and no cover stone. Coffins were built by people from the Funnel Cup culture, who came to our regions from 3400 BC. Funnel beaker people lived in small settlements in the forests on the higher sandy soils.
