The longest short cut
This afternoon we decided instead of finishing last minute Christmas Shopping amongst the York crowds we would go to the shop at Beningbrough Hall. It's less than 2 1/2 miles from Mum's house. Not today it wasn't. With the bridge down between Linton and Newton we followed the back roads to Alne and then Tollerton where, to be fair there was a 'flood' sign. I looked at my Yaris, I looked at the water, we turned around. 40 minutes later going too far west, then east, then west again all the way avoiding puddles like this one, we arrived at our destination.
It took 2 pints in the pub to numb the memory (they're wearing off now). We left the car in Newton, it's easier to walk the couple of miles to it than repeat all that again just to get to the station tomorrow. We walked back across the footbridge with the flood waters lapping at our toes. Now where did I put that boat?
