Rose-breasted Grosbeak ~ male
Once this happened this afternoon there was no need to wonder what my blip for the day would be. He was happily sharing the sunflower seeds with a male northern cardinal (see extra). I believe the northern cardinal used to be called the "cardinal grosbeak" in fact. So.
Mind you, this wasn't a "lifer" for me - I've seen them in West Virginia during the festival (although not this year - some people saw them, but I didn't) - I've also seen them in Costa Rica! But this was the first time ever at my own house!!!! He stopped for a bite to eat, apparently. I don't know if they ever nest around here. The range map makes it look like they nest in Virginia, but probably in the mountains. Still, who knows?
Made my day!
