The Runcorn Bridge

In fact there are 2 bridges in this image. At the front is the railway bridge, the Ethelfleda or Britannia bridge which was opened in 1868. Behind is the Runcorn Bridge which opened in 1961 to provide a crossing for cars, bikes and pedestrians. It has been closed for repairs ever since the new bridge (which is a little higher up the Mersey and just out of view) was opened last year. It is due to reopen in 2020, when it will have a toll- like its new neighbour. In the meantime it is rather difficult to get from Widnes to Runcorn by bike. The pedestrian way on the "old bridge" is open in the evenings and at weekends, but otherwise you have to catch a bus across the new bridge.
