Yum!
A good and bad day!
Good because we did everything we set out to do and bad because it rained most of the afternoon which is the first time in a week on this holiday.
To be fair we chose to go north today as the forecast wasn’t as good for walking.
Wednesday is the day for the Craft and Food market at Elphin so north was the right direction. Chris got his charcuterie and I had a good chat with the lady I’ve met before at various craft places whose husband makes lovely silver and pewter jewellery, amongst other things.
Next stop the Rock Stop Cafe at Unapool for coffee.
It was fine if cloudy at this time but heading further north we drove into the rain which was sleety on higher ground.
Dropping down into Durness we didn’t run out of it but our aim today was to visit Smoo Cave. We’ve been here three times to walk to Faraid Head, go to Cape Wrath or just past through to Caithness and we’ve never fitted in the cave visit. Had to eat our picnic in the car above Sango Bay but going into the cave the weather didn't really matter. The waterfall cave was lacking in a waterfall which is not really surprising as everywhere has been really dry but we took a look anyway opting not to don protective head ware and take the boat to reach the inner parts of the cave on a tour.
Well if you think that was our main reason for going you would be wrong! Balnakiel Craft Village has an amazing Chocolatier - Cocoa Mountain. A cup of tea or any other drink and you can get a reduced rate on 4 or 6 chocolates per drink. We just had four between us. I asked for raspberry, which we both had and then I had a dark chocolate and lime one. Chris chose one with pink stripes - peanut butter and cranberry! He said it tasted mainly of cranberries. Their hot chocolate is meant to be amazing but I don’t often drink chocolate unless I feel the need for comfort!
It was really busy despite the fact they have moved to slightly bigger premises on the Craft Village which used to be a military early warning station!
Back at the house it didn’t appear that there had been any rain!
It’s the luck of the draw!
