The World's Biggest Consumer of ...
...the French liqueur Benedictine!
This is Burnley Miners Social Club (although not many miners around nowadays). In a year the members of this club consume over 1,000 bottles of Benedictine!
The golden drink has been a favourite here for more than a century after being popular among soldiers from the 11th Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment who developed a taste for it during the First World War whilst fighting in Normandy.
They drank it to keep warm and liked it so much they asked the club to import it when they returned home.
The most popular drink is a 'Bene'n'hot' - the liqueur served with hot water - but there is also the Bene Bomb - like a Jager Bomb except with a shot of Bene (Benedictine) in the energy drink.
