Armitage "Tunnel"
Making our way back towards Great Haywood aiming to be back by mid afternoon, so that we can give the boat a good clean etc before leaving early (ish) tomorrow.
Our route takes us past Armitage, famous for the firm Armitage Shanks. One of the other landmarks is the Armitage Tunnel, well it was a tunnel until 1971. In 1971 subsidence from coal mining meant the roof of the tunnel had to be removed. The dark section the boat is coming through is a road bridge taking the A513 over the canal. Apart from being known as the "tunnel" that isn't a tunnel the Armitage Tunnel was arguably the first navigable canal tunnel on the main system.
Whoops! I had the 10th as my 2000 post not this one!
