Luskentyre
Another fab day and hard to choose what to blip.
When we were here on Harris a few years ago we realised we completely missed the little dead end road that goes off to Luskentyre, the hamlet. Put that right this morning.
This shot is at the head of the bay. Just love the blues and whites of the sand. Another lady did too as she was painting it!
When we got to the end of the road there was a beach car park next to the cemetery (There always is in the Highlands and Islands. Great places to buried!)
We walked along the seemingly endless strand of white sand that is just around the corner from here but out of sight of the main road - extra
A lovely walk with very few people around. They considerately provide toilets too and we’ve noticed up here, apart from being clean there is always paper, hot water, soap, paper towels or an air dryer. When we walked last Monday at Achmelvic someone was cleaning the toilets and it was a bank holiday!
Back to the main road we could look across the bay from Seilebost, the long beach being just out of sight around the headland.
As I said before nothing opens on a Sunday but we had read up on the Temple cafe (thank you fifetourer) and it said they were open Sundays. Great for a coffee stop with views too at the end of the wonderful West Harris coast.
Along the south coast looking in at the ferry port at Levervurgh and the Historic Scotland church of St Clement at Rodel.
(Interestingly we passed three ‘modern’ churches with 12.00pm services all with full car parks.)
Back along the ‘Bays‘ East Harris road which is like a moonscape by contrast to the West.
Our last trip of the day was to the end of another road along the south coast of North Harris. Very few houses along here but there were bus stops, a castle style hotel and another lovely white sand beach at the end. Returning we hit a Highland Coo jam. It must have been tea time as they all knew where they were going and taking the road.
Can’t express how beautiful Harris is. Worth coming if only for a day!
Dinner calls at the Harris Hotel in Tarbert tonight and I’ve noticed a different single malt in our room for later - a Dalwhinnie. Thought I better get this out of the way earlier today. Also we have to be up early for another ferry!
