Isle of Axholme

Backblipped

I was down visiting Mum in Yorkshire this past week. She is now out of hospital (hooray!) and settled back at home. On the first morning, before hospital visiting, I went for a drive in the car to the Isle of Axholme, just outside Doncaster, in search of a blip. In the atrocious weather, this was the best of the bunch. The Isle of Axholme is so called because the area used to be an island before the Dutch were called in to drain the surrounding fenland. That is why the photo could possibly have been taken in the Netherlands. The surrounding land is very flat and fertile, criss-crossed with straight roads and drainage channels. At this point in the country you can drive through the corners of three counties in the space of 5 minutes: South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire!

Out of interest, the largest town on the Isle is called Epworth, and is the birthplace of John Wesley, a famous Christian who started the Methodist movement that was once so strong in this region.
