Water
Until this arrived, a morning (or for that fact, evening) shower was always an event. The local water pressure is - at best - unreliable. You could turn on the shower and find such a slow trickle that it was back to wet flannel and soap, in the hope that the water didn't stop flowing until the soap had been removed. Solution, water storage and pumps. When not actually using water, the mains pressure would very slowly fill the tank, then there was enough to be pumped to the house. It was a pleasure knowing that a shower was now guaranteed - until the next power-cut.
