The Evier

My blip today is of an ancient carved granite trough. It currently resides outside the Catel church and previously was displayed at Pleneuf Court. The carvings have been described as sun and moon or animal faces. This particular trough has been identified as an 'Evier' which basically is a medieval kitchen sink. It would have been set into an alcove within a thick farmhouse wall and there may have been a sluice below to drain waste water. There are only two known carved examples in Guernsey, the other is at Castle Cornet. The two holes in the trough would not originally have existed and must have been added when the use became ornamental.
