From the family archives.

The Siege of Ladysmith was a protracted engagement during the Second Boer War between 2 Nov 1899 and 28 Feb 1900 at Ladysmith, Natal.

My wife's maternal great grandfather (centre in white shirt) was a Sergeant Farrier with the Royal Artillery at the time.

Following the siege, he left the military and set himself up in business as a farrier and general smith in the town.
