Bowling Green Marsh
I was on a very interesting historical walk with our local walking group. We had a formal guide take us around the streets of Topsham where we were told about the origins from the Roman times through the prosperous times of port trading to the present. The town was at one time the second busiest port in the country with a ship building centre and trading commodities such as wool for sugar, olive oil and other items. Many of the larger merchants properties are built in a Dutch style and tend to overlook the river. We wandered along several small back streets and passageways all full of character but difficult to photograph as they are so narrow. After the tour we had tea at the Museum and walked back through the fields recently acquired by local residents in an attempt to stop them being developed for housing. They are now being managed as 'wild flower' fields. Its a great achievement as they are located adjacent to the river. On our walk back to the cars we passed Bowling Green Marsh where these cows were grazing on land that is usually occupied by birds.
A very interesting afternoon in wonderful weather.
