Solitary Leap

At Fort River, this Solitary Sandpiper had just finished bathing and begun a wing flap, which culminated in this dramatic jump--more activity than I'd ever seen in this species. (For a conventional image, see the extra here). There were three solitaries around--one more than previously.  Another notable species was a Field Sparrow (see the extra)--rather uncommon and previously quite secretive here.  This one hung around for quite a while, and I got several decent shots--my first ever! The afternoon's event was a trip to our tax preparer in Williamsburg (20 minutes NW on Route 9).
