Mr. Redlegs!
Sunday
We didn’t need to leave the house until a little before 3 pm to get down to the airport, and I felt I was reasonably well organized on the packing front, so we made it to church as usual to sing in the choir. Most of the schools finished this week, so things start winding down for the summer, and next Sunday will be the last Sunday they sing on a weekly basis - over the summer they just sing once a month. Thunderstorms were in the forecast for the afternoon, which we were hoping wouldn’t delay our departure, but as our departure time from the house approached, the skies were indeed looking quite threatening. We had just got the cases and ourselves in the car, when the heavens opened! Fortunately, whilst it was torrential, it didn’t last long, and even by the time we got to the library to drop two more books off, it had almost blown over. The skies continued to be rather threatening, but fortunately it didn’t develop into anything, and we took off for Detroit on time. Last year was the first time we had done this route through Detroit to Heathrow, because we usually fly into Manchester, but last year and this year we wanted to fly into London, and having liked the connection last year, we repeated it. You land and take off from the same (very nice) terminal, just about 10 or 12 gates apart, so it’s a nice easy transfer. However, in the meantime they had changed the flight times - last year we left Detroit early evening, putting us into London very early in the morning, whereas this year we didn’t take off until 10.30, arriving London late morning local time. On Tuesday I posted a picture of one of the University of Cincinnati Bearcats around the city this summer. Today, we were greeted at Cincinnati airport by one of the Cincinnati Reds (baseball team) mascots, Mr. Redlegs! A number of these commemorative benches have been placed around the city to celebrate the teams 150th anniversary!
