The Bear Who Was Erdnase
Today's joker is from my latest deck of cards: Erdnase x Madison. S. W. Erdnase was the pseudonym of the writer of Expert at the Card Table, a book which is focused more on gambling cheats than magic, but acknowledges the interaction, and does also discusss magic. I haven't made my way through very much of it so far. It's certainly not easy - to execute, or to read. ;)
Martin Gardner, a wonderful magician and mathematician, wrote (in an introduction to the copy I have, and in a book of his own) about a theory that Erdnase was in fact Milton Franklin Andrews, a card cheat and murderer who committed suicide in 1905.
Not especially auspicious, but there's some good stuff in the book.
