Boxing Day in Burra
I like Burra. It has an honesty about it. It started as a raging copper mining town in the 1840s, one of the richest copper mines in the world at the time. But the orebody was small and they were mining the rich supergene zone. The best ore ran out within a decade or so and since then Burra has mainly been a little country town surviving on trade with the local farmers and a little tourism. This morning I wandered over to Burra hoping that a pretty good cafe there would be open, they usually are on holidays. But not today. Only the service station and the newsagent were open. So I walked around for a while, bought a paper, said hello to this old-timer, and drove home again.
