Lilac Stairs and Shadows
Today I accompanied a friend to one of the outpatients departments in the Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital in Camperdown, Sydney. Lots of the hospital buildings have been painted a beautiful lilac colour (to mimic the Jacaranda trees which bloom on the campus during Spring and Summer). The walls have been painted in this bright colour because “hospitals can be daunting places for our community when they are worried about a loved one or trying to get to an appointment. Our patients and their loved ones see the purple and know they are close, or heading in the right direction, even before they are greeted by our staff or our wonderful volunteers”.
It worked, saw the purple walls, saw the stairs and the shadows and the girl with the crumpled umbrella, took a photo and felt great. And my friend had her stitches removed, got a clean bill of health and we both went home happy!
