Puffin

The weather forecast wasn't too good for today but it has been really sunny and very clear. Because it was dry first thing and we were expecting rain we went out fairly early for a walk at Mae Sands (extra). We had seals for company but as you see that was it. Pottered around after that at the north end of the island and watched the inter-island plane do the world's shortest scheduled flight from Westray to Papay. It took about 90 seconds today.

This afternoon the clouds cleared away completely and we went to the Castle o' Burrian. This is an impressive sea stack which is home to nesting seabirds including many puffins. Last year we visited in May and saw one puffin. Today the cliffs were really busy with them and they were a delight to see. Being a few weeks later must have helped but let's hope it's a sign of a healthy puffin population too.

After that we went to the very south end of the island and wandered about looking over to Eday. In the far distance you could make out North Ronaldsay. It really is clear air.

Home now and on Wednesday as well as Saturday Pierowall Fish transforms into Jack's Chippy so it's fish suppers for us again tonight. A lot of walking is being done so I feel ok about this. Last night we sat and watched yachts out on the bay as golden light turned the water a beautiful colour. Hoping for similar this evening.
