Striking Memorial
The accent today is rightly on the 75th anniversary of D-day, the momentous allied invasion of the Normandy beaches of France which changed the course of World War 2 in 1944, yet it was a simple memorial to World War 1 which caught my eye.
This is a memorial bench installed by Wellow Parish Council in the village to commemorate the centenary of the end of the war. Appropriately it is facing the village war memorial but on the opposite side of one of the principal roads through the village. To villagers it is a welcome resting spot; to visitors, a striking talking point.
