Vanellus vanellus or Northern Lapwingor Peewit or Green Plover, a very interesting bird and as a wader, seemingly very out of place here. However, the pair have been here for weeks, always flying over and landing on this same maize field. At the moment doing probably 5 walks a week here and without fail they accompany us with their screeching warning call. However now only one is to be seen as the partner must be sitting on the nest. But where the nest is, is a mystery as the corn/maize field is certainly not a place to have a ground nest.
The post was actually more to show how the cold weather this year has kept the maize back - 364 days ago I showed the maize which looked somewhat different at this time of year despite a hail storm which had damaged the young plants. Yes, last year was perhaps exceptional except the farmers didn't know this at the time and hadn't sown much earlier, not trusting the unusual conditions.
