The Beaches
Hard going over to France not to miss the D-Day celebrations going on and coming home out of Dieppe it was extremely hard not to think of the carnage that took place here in August 1942 just a couple of years earlier.
Operation Jubilee, the Dieppe Raid. The Germans were occupying the port and this raid was supposed to hold the port and gather intelligence. Made up of 6,500 Canadians mainly, 1000 Brits and 50 US Army Rangers. None of the objectives were met but it did give the top brass something to think about when planning D-Day. A debacle in that the aircrew didn't realise they were missing the underwater minefields, pillboxes, machine gun emplacements and nests, plus the German E-boats attacked the ships as they crossed the Channel.
The Germans had raised the hotels, put in machine guns, pillboxes were in the casino, snipers were everywhere and the barbed wire on the beach was 6-10 foot thick on the beach. The casualties were appalling!
Easy to look over the ferry bows and take a shot of the beaches now. Yes I am thankful!
