Did you ever hear of such a thing?

Does this look archaic or old-fashioned?

As a linguistics student I've been looking into the difference between 'Did you ever...?' and 'Have you ever...?'. This particular reference dates back to 1931. Now in the 21st century you'd probably prefer 'Have you ever' to communicate a similar thought.
